Tough loss in OT...
The Atom Reps had it come down to overtime last night vs. Arthur in the OMHA playdowns.
Game 2 of the series was played on Sunday afternoon in Milverton. The first period started off great for the Atoms. We played back and forth and no goals were scored on either side in the first period.
The second period had Arthur finding the back of our net to go on the board 1-0. Our Atoms battled but just couldn't get one by the Arhtur netminder.
The third period we continued to work hard but came up short when Arthur scored their second and final of the game.
Final score 2-0 for Arthur. A good effort from our team and Reid Baillie as always, did a great job in net.
Game 3 came last night, Monday in Milverton. Our hopes were high that we could come out on top and move on in the playdown series.
The first period was again back and forth. Our guys moved the puck well and tried their hardest to find the back of the net. Arthur go on the board first only 3 minutes into the game. The first period ended 1-0.
The second period brought our first goal of the game on a breakaway for Cohen Smith. He fired a shot and in it went, unassisted! Our spirits were lifted and the kids found their legs again. Four minutes later Logan Dallner brought the puck up to Kyle Steckley who let one go and scored a big one to bring us ahead 2-1!
The third period started with our team ahead and hoping to hold on for another 15 mins. 1 minute into the period Jamie Donnelly and Ben Fizell worked up the ice and fed the puck to Cohen. Smith was able to get the puck by the Arthur goalie and brought us ahead 3-1. Our kids found it hard to keep the momentum going and everyone on the ice was loosing their legs. The pace of the game slowed down as everyone got a little more tired.
We fought off a 5 on 3 as we had 2 players in the box! A great penalty killing effort for sure.
We couldn't hold Arthur off and they got by Reid with 12 minutes left to make it 3-2. We had to keep our hopes up that we could fend them off for 12 minutes. With a 1:19 left in the game, we got a penalty. Arthur pulled their goalie to make it a 6 on 4 for the last grueling 1:19. With 19.7 seconds left, there was a scramble in front of our net and the puck found it's way in. Tied 3-3.
Into overtime we go and the kids had to find their last bit of strength and stamina. Four minutes into OT Arhtur got the puck by Reid and won the game. What a heartbreaker for our Atoms as they skated so hard and worked as a team. A great effort by all. Reid Baillie was stellar in net and deserves a huge round of applause!
We await our WOAA playoff schedule. Practice Friday night in Monkton at 7pm.
